The idea for Ability411was originally conceived by Luke Melchior, a former CanAssist employee. Luke envisioned an online service that would connect “ability-seeking clients with disabilities to leading-edge assistive technology.” Luke was closely involved in the initial planning of the service and chose its name. Unfortunately, health challenges resulted in Luke’s departure from CanAssist in 2016.

Luke first met the CanAssist team in 2008 to ask whether we could develop a customized document stand for him. At the time, he was giving regular presentations as part of his role with Muscular Dystrophy Canada and, unable to use a podium, had to make do with a makeshift device to hold his notes. CanAssist’s engineering team developed a simple, elegant stand that was a great success.

Passionate about both technology and disability issues, Luke was a natural fit at CanAssist. He joined the team in 2010 holding several roles, including marketing specialist, product tester and contributor to online communications. Before joining CanAssist, Luke was involved in disability-related initiatives at the local and national levels and had run his own online business.

CanAssist is grateful for Luke’s contribution – to our organization, to increasing awareness of disability issues, and to playing a key role in the creation of Ability411.

View questions that Ability411 visitors are asking about technologies for seniors.
