What product will help support my wrists when lifting weights at the gym?

Question

My doctor has told me that I should lift weights to maintain and improve my balance as I get older. I have taken him up on this advice, but unfortunately, since doing so, I have found that my wrists have been getting very sore. Do you know of a product that will help support my wrists when lifting heavy objects, such as standard gym weights?

Our answer

It is great to hear that you are taking steps to maintain and improve your balance as you age. However, it is also important to protect your joints and muscles when engaging in physical activity. There are a number of devices that are designed to protect your wrists when lifting heavy objects like gym weights. Here are direct links to some examples of products you may want to explore:

This product, which comes in a set of two (one glove for each hand), costs about $28 (CDN), plus a shipping fee.
  • Rogue Wrist Wraps (at Rogue Canada) provide additional wrist support and stability when weightlifting. This product, which comes in three different sizes, is sold in pairs and costs about $20 (CDN), plus a shipping fee.
  • Weight Lifting Hooks Grip by DMoose Fitness (at Amazon Canada) are neoprene wrist wraps with a non-slip weightlifting hook. This product, which helps with grip strength, is sold in pairs and costs about $30 to $40 (CDN), plus a shipping fee.
