There are a number of products on the market that offer protection in the event of a fall. Below are direct links to some examples of products that you may like to explore:
- Fabric hip protectors are widely used to reduce impact on joints during a fall. The HipSaver SlimFit Garment (at Brown Healthcare) is discreetly worn under clothing and comes with padding for the hips, tailbone or knees. This product ranges in price from $60 to $90 (CDN).
- Walking poles have also been found to be useful in preventing falls. Activator Poles (at Urban Poling) were designed by an occupational therapist specifically for rehab and long-term conditions. Walking poles range in price from $15 to $200 (CDN).
You may also like to know about The Wearable Airbag by ActiveProtective, which is not yet available but is currently being developed in the U.S. This product is essentially a wearable belt with sensors that detect motion unique to falling. When the device senses a fall, it will automatically deploy to protect the hip bones.
There are a number of other factors that can reduce your risk of falling. You can complete a BC Government falls risk questionnaire to determine your risk of falling as well as actions your can take to prevent falls and remain independent.
