Fall Detection Without SOS Buttons

Question

Are there any fall detection monitoring services that do NOT include a help button for people with advanced dementia? A button would be pushed with no understanding of its use. I need something wearable and automatic, without the person having to make decisions.

Our answer

Looking out for loved ones with advanced dementia can be challenging, especially regarding fall safety. There are a variety of fall alert or fall detection resources on the market. Such services and devices cannot be expected to function 100% liability-free; however, they are certainly better than nothing.

Most fall alert or detection devices include an emergency help or SOS button, and this button cannot be deactivated. However, there is a unique technology that uses motion and AI scanning of spaces to detect when an individual has fallen.

  • Aqara Presence Sensor by Aqara (at amazon.ca) is a sensor that detects and tracks the motion of up to five people in the room the sensor is located in. It is connected through the Wi-Fi within a home and will notify users of certain activities including falls through HomeKit, Alexa, Google Home, and Home Assistant. This product costs around $110 (CDN), plus additional shipping fees.
