What device will help me lift my weak leg?

Question

I have recently had hip replacement surgery and I now have difficulty lifting my right leg, especially when getting out of the car and when getting out of bed. Do you know of a device that will help me lift my weak leg?

Our answer

It often takes some time to regain full function of legs and hips after undergoing hip surgery. Below are a number of direct links to leg lifter straps, which are designed to help carefully lift a weak leg:

  • The Leg Lifter by MOBB Home Health Care (at agecomfort.com) consists of a webbing strap that extends 36 inches long with both hand and foot loops. This product costs about $15 to $20 (CDN), plus an additional shipping fee.
  • The Triple Loop Resting Leg Lifter by Sammons Preston (at Amazon Canada) allows you to easily maneuver your legs to get out of chairs, beds and cars. This strap is ideal for those who have limited mobility and for those recovering from surgery. This device costs about $40 to $60 (CDN), plus an additional shipping fee.
  • The Leg Lifter for Weak Hip Flexors by Norco (at RehabMart.com) is specifically designed for post-hip surgery clients to be able to raise and/or lower their legs. The total length including the hand strap measures 42.5 inches. This product is available through a U.S. retailer and costs about $20 to $30 (USD), plus an additional shipping fee.
