What device help one eat comfortably when in a lounging position?

Question

Just back from the hospital, my wife needs to keep her leg elevated to reduce swelling. She's sitting in a lounge chair to do this, but it’s very awkward for her to eat. What are the available options for a small table that can pivot and tilt?

Our answer

Pivot and Tilt Overbed, by Drive MedicalIf your wife is expected to be laid up for a while and your budget allows it, you may want to consider a tilting table on casters that can be easily rolled over or away from her bed. One example is the Pivot and Tilt Overbed Table by Drive, which is available from Macdonald’s Home Health Care. This device costs about $200 (CDN) and can also be purchased at several other online retailers, including Amazon Canada.

Another option is a laptop table, which is less adjustable but also less expensive. Below are some examples of these products:

It is recommended that your wife is sitting up as much as possible when eating to reduce the risk of choking or aspiration, especially if she is elderly or has a history of swallowing difficulties. Aim for at least 30 degrees of torso elevation - pillows can help with positioning if needed.
