If your wife is expected to be laid up for a while and your budget allows it, you may want to consider a tilting table on casters that can be easily rolled over or away from her bed. Another option is a laptop table, which is less adjustable but also less expensive. Below are some examples of these products:

It is recommended that your wife is sitting up as much as possible when eating to reduce the risk of choking or aspiration, especially if she is elderly or has a history of swallowing difficulties. Aim for at least 30 degrees of torso elevation - pillows can help with positioning if needed.
