How do I help my brother find the right scooter?

My brother now needs a scooter to remain independent and is seeking financial support from me. I had no idea they were so expensive and that there are so many types and models to choose from! Can you help me with finding a good used scooter?

Our answer

Before purchasing a scooter, you will want to determine whether a scooter is the correct choice for your brother and if so, what size and features are appropriate for him.

To keep costs down, you may want to purchase a pre-owned scooter that has been inspected and that has a warranty from a reputable company that can help you with replacement parts and service. Just like buying a used car, check a scooter's make and model, how old it is, who has been using it and for what purpose. Used scooters can range in price; however, they typically cost over $2,000 (CDN).

Before speaking to a sales representative, determine which features your brother needs. Here are some key questions to ask:

  • Will the scooter be used indoors, outdoors, or both?
    • For indoor use, are there any restrictions to consider (i.e. a narrow gate, or stairs)?
    • If the scooter will be used on roads, check local laws for minimum speed requirements and regulations on headlights and taillights. Ensure the scooter meets these standards.
  • Does the scooter need to be transported in a vehicle?
    • If so, do you have access to a vehicle with a lift?
    • If your brother uses public transportation, can the scooter be maneuvered onto local buses?

Other features to check:

  • Does your brother find the fit comfortable?
  • What battery lifespan is appropriate for his anticipated scooter use?
  • Will your brother need 3-wheel maneuverability or 4-wheel stability?
  • Does the scooter have the appropriate accessories (i.e. cargo storage for shopping, or a rain canopy for inclement weather)?
